Legal JJD Zombies
JJD Zombies Privacy Policy
About this policy
JJD Zombies is made by Jiffy Jr Development (Alex Quaintance, doing business as Jiffy Jr Development). This policy explains what information the game uses, why, who handles it, and how to ask us to delete it. "We" and "us" means Jiffy Jr Development.
The short version: the game uses a few online services so you can play together, chat, add friends and post scores. It doesn't show ads, doesn't sell your information, doesn't track you for marketing, and doesn't collect analytics or crash reports.
What the game collects, and why
Your player ID
The first time the game goes online (for example, when the main menu loads the leaderboards), it signs in to Unity Gaming Services without an account. Unity gives your copy of the game a random player ID. There's no email address or password. The game saves a sign-in token on your computer so you keep the same player ID next time.
We use the player ID to run online games, the leaderboards and the friends list.
Your player name
You can type a name on the main menu. If you leave it blank:
- in the Steam version, the game uses your Steam name;
- otherwise, the game picks a random funny name.
Your name is shown to the other players in your game, next to your text chat messages and in the voice chat list. It's also sent to Unity when you post a score, use the friends list, or join voice chat. The host of a game replaces offensive names with a random one.
Online games
When you host or join an online game, the game uses Unity's Sessions and Relay services to connect the players. Unity handles your player ID, the game's join code and your IP address (needed to connect you). Relay keeps your IP address hidden from the other players.
If you join a game on your home network or by typing an IP address, your computer connects straight to the other players' computers, so they can see your IP address.
During a game, the game shares what's needed to play with the other players: your name, your character, where you are, what you do, and your score.
Leaderboards
When you finish a run that counts (no cheats, no head start), the game sends it to Unity's Leaderboards service: your score on each board (highest round, score, zombie kills), plus your player name, the map, how many people played, the date and the game version. Each player keeps one entry per board, their best.
Anyone who plays the game can see the Top 10, including the names on it.
Before sending a score, the game checks its own files on your computer for mod loaders or changed game files. If it finds any, it just doesn't send the score. Nothing about the check is sent anywhere.
Friends list
If you open the Friends page, the game uses Unity's Friends service. It stores:
- your friend tag (your name plus a number, like Name#1234);
- your friends, and friend requests you send and receive;
- what your friends can see about you: whether you're online, whether you're in the menu or playing (and which map), and, while you're in an online game, its join code so they can join you;
- invites you send to friends (your name, the join code and the map).
Only people you've added as friends see your status and join code.
Voice chat
In games with other players, the game puts everyone in a voice channel using Vivox, a Unity service. Push to talk is on by default (B). Your voice goes through Vivox to the other players in your game while you talk. Vivox also receives your player ID, your player name and your IP address so it can connect you.
The game does not record your voice, and we never get your voice. You can turn voice chat off in Settings > Voice chat.
Text chat
Text messages (up to 120 characters) go from you to the host of the game and then to every player in it, over the same connection the game uses. The game doesn't save them, and they aren't sent to us. They fade from the screen after 12 seconds and are gone when you leave the game.
Voice and text chat aren't moderated. Please be kind, and don't share personal information with players you don't know.
Update check (not in the Steam version)
When the game starts, it asks jiffyreach.com for a small file that says which version is newest, so it can tell you when an update is out. The request carries nothing about you or your game. As with any web request, the website's host (Cloudflare) can see your IP address. The Steam version doesn't do this, because Steam updates the game itself.
Steam (the Steam version only)
When you play through Steam, the game asks Steam for:
- your Steam name, to use as your player name if you haven't typed one;
- your Steam ID, which the game only uses on your computer;
- whether you own DLC, to unlock it.
The game also tells Steam what you're doing (in the menu, or playing a map, how many players, and the join code of an online game), so your Steam friends can see it and join you. Steam shows this to your Steam friends.
The game can also sign in to Unity with your Steam account so your scores follow you to other computers. That is switched off at the moment. If we switch it on, we'll update this policy first.
The itch.io version has no Steam code in it.
Stored on your computer only
The game saves these on your computer, and they stay there:
- your settings (sound, graphics, controls and key bindings, voice chat, Match Setup);
- the name you typed, your character and outfit choices;
- your best runs (the leaderboard you see when you're offline);
- the Unity sign-in token and a profile name;
- a log file (Player.log) with technical messages, which can include your player name or Steam name.
On Windows, settings are in the registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Jiffy Jr Development\JJD Zombies, and the log is in %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Jiffy Jr Development\JJD Zombies. We only see your log file if you send it to us yourself, for example in a bug report.
The Unity engine
The game is made with Unity. The Unity engine may send Unity basic, anonymous information about your hardware and operating system (such as graphics card, processor, memory and OS version). This is not linked to your player name.
What the game does not collect
No analytics, no crash reports, no advertising IDs, no location, no contacts, no payment details. The game only uses your microphone for voice chat in games with other players.
Buying the game
You buy the game from Steam (Valve) or itch.io. They handle your payment and your account, under their own privacy policies. We don't get your payment details. Steam gives us sales reports. itch.io may show us the email address on your purchase. We only use it if you contact us about your purchase.
Who handles your data
- Unity Technologies (Unity Gaming Services: Authentication, Sessions, Relay, Leaderboards, Friends, and Vivox): Player ID, online games, leaderboards, friends, voice chat (https://unity.com/legal/game-player-and-app-user-privacy-policy)
- Valve (Steam): Buying the game, Steam name, friends, invites, DLC (https://store.steampowered.com/privacy_agreement/)
- itch.io: Buying the game (https://itch.io/docs/legal/privacy-policy)
These companies may store data in the United States and other countries.
We can see what's stored in the game's Unity services (player IDs, names, scores, friends) so we can run them and fix problems. We don't sell or share your information with anyone else.
How long we keep it
- Player ID, leaderboard entries and friends list: until you ask us to delete them, or until we close the game's online services.
- Online games: the session only lasts as long as the game. Unity may keep service logs (which can include IP addresses) for a while, as Unity's own policy describes.
- Voice chat: not recorded or kept by the game.
- Text chat: not kept.
- Purchases: kept by Steam or itch.io under their policies.
- Data on your computer: until you delete it or uninstall the game (see below).
Your choices and rights
- Play solo or on your home network if you'd rather not use the online services. (The main menu may still check the online leaderboards when it has an internet connection.)
- Type any name you like. It doesn't have to be your real name.
- Turn off voice chat in Settings.
- Don't open the Friends page if you don't want a friend tag.
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what data we have about you, to correct it, to delete it, or to object to how it's used.
To delete your online data, email JiffyJrGaming@gmail.com with:
- your friend tag (shown on the Friends page), or the name you used on the leaderboard;
- roughly when you last played.
We'll delete your Unity player, which removes your leaderboard entries and friends list. We'll reply within 30 days.
To delete the data on your computer, uninstall the game, then delete the registry key and folder listed above (on Mac and Linux, the game's Unity preferences and log folders).
Children
JJD Zombies is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you think a child under 13 has used the online features, email JiffyJrGaming@gmail.com and we'll delete their data.
Changes to this policy
If the game starts collecting something new, we'll update this policy and the date at the top before that update comes out.
